Sleep without sedation- fight Insomnia

Insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder affecting 10- 15 % general population worldwide and is characterized by an individual's reporting symptoms like difficulty in sleep, long sleep latency, frequent awakenings, or prolonged periods of wakefulness during the sleep and frequent transient arousals that affects the individual’s quality of life.

Various studies have noted insomnia to be quite a common condition with symptoms present in about 33–50% of the adult population and affects 20-30% of the clinical population.

Despite these high prevalence rates, evidence suggests that insomnia is mostly under-recognized, under-diagnosed, and under-treated, with the condition continuing to remain persistent in 50–85% of individuals over follow-up intervals of one to several years.

Factors responsible:

While the cause of this increased risk of Insomnia is not well defined but several factors can be considered that includes:

  • Psychiatric disorders.
  • Anxiety & Stress
  • Depression
  • Comorbid medical conditions
  • Social stigma/ Diseases like Vitiligo
  • Study induced stress
  • Onset of Menses & menopause
  • Older adults work stress
  • Old Age
  • Family issues.

It is estimated that 40% of insomnia patients have comorbid psychiatric disorders in which stress, anxiety & depression are the commonest.

Existing treatment & its drawbacks

There are several strategies to manage chronic insomnia. To initiate treatment, it is necessary to define it and differentiate it from other co-morbid psychiatric disorders. The available treatment regime is as follows –

  • Non-pharmacological Strategies: Stimulus control therapy, relaxation & cognitive therapy, sleep restriction and Sleep hygiene education.
  • Pharmacological Therapy: It includes different agents like non-benzodiazepine hypnotics (zopiclone, zolpidem, and zaleplon) are the first line of management followed by benzodiazepines, amitryptiline and antihistaminics.

This drug treatment is indicated for patients as short term alleviation but insufficient for long term management. However long term use of these available treatment can lead to the following adverse effects:

  • Dependence
  • Discontinuation syndrome
  • Blunting of emotions
  • Psychomotor impairment
  • Most threatening Sedation & tolerance.

Ayurveda: A better regime

As Ayurveda is always known for its action on the root cause. There are several herbs and classical ayurvedic preparations which have potent and effective therapeutic actions to fight against Insomnia without causing any adverse effects, especially Sedation. Following herbs are found to be very effective in insomnia:

Herbs mentioned above are the choice of therapy to manage insomnia without causing sedation but because of this captivated schedule of day to day life it is very tough to prepare a remedy for these herbs at home. Solving this inconvenience and clubbing all the benefits of herbs, Aimil pharmaceuticals offers a combination of these herbs with a brand name MEMTONE in syrup and tablet form not only manages insomnia but also benefits in improving memory & concentration.

Antimicrobial resistance and its natural solution

The world owes a big thankyou to Sir Alexander Fleming for discovering penicillin, the first broad spectrum antibiotic. But today’s world needs to pay more heed to the warning of Fleming on antimicrobial resistance which has been declared as Global Health emergency by the WHO. The centre for disease prevention predicts 10 million deaths annually by year 2050 due to anti-microbial resistance which is three times from the current 3 million deaths per year.

The menace of anti-microbial resistance

Resistance to bacteria is widespread from simple E.coli to MRSA and in some countries half of its population have stopped responding to the standard antibiotic treatment for E.coli infection. Other deadly infections such as S.typhi have also witnessed the sequential emergence of resistance to all first line anti-microbials like chloramphenicol, amoxicillin, co-trimaxazole & fluroquinolones.

With our resources to combat bacterial infections getting depleted there is a larger concern which is lurking ahead, the WHO 2019 report states that the drugs in the R&D pipeline are insufficient to combat the rising threat of resistance.

New resource

With the likelihood of modern science being outrun by anti-microbial resistance, there is a ray of hope at the other side of the tunnel. Recently, researchers at AIIMS, Bhopal have found out a potential alternative to commonly used anti-microbials. The drug – Fifatrol which is a multi-drug combination of Ayurveda has been found to be effctive against Staphylloccocus spesies, S.typhi etc. The drug comprises of Mrityunjay rasa, Tribhuvan Kirti rasa, Sudarshan ghan vati, Sanjeevani vati & godanti bhasm along with eight herbal extracts. In the study Fifatrol has been found suitable in controlling spread of infections caused due to E.coli and it has inhibited the growth of clinically isolated S.typhi at lowest MIC dose of 62.5 microgram per millilitre. The drug which is manufactured by Aimil Pharmaceuticals (I) Ltd. is undergoing further investigations on the Enterobacteriaceae family as well. Fifatrol works on the principle of bio-synergism where each constituent enhances the action of another constituent. The herbal component like Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) and Tinospora cordyfolia (Giloe) enhances the body’s immune system by increasing the levels of IL-6 and beta cell differentiation. Tinospora cordyfolia have been shown to enhance the activation of human lymphocytes with downstream synthesis of pro anti-inflammatory cytokines. Another herb Picrorhiza kurroa (kutaki) improves metabolism to fasten recovery and along with Cyperus rotundus (motha) detoxifies the body and removes toxins. Other herbs such as Pongamia pinnata (karnj) & Swertia chirata (chirayata) works effectively in tandem to reduce the symptoms associated with bacterial infections especially in cases of upper respiratory tract infections

This is high time that we start looking for alternatives and encourage the research on drugs like Fifatrol because we only have anti-biotics as a resource to fight infections and we cannot afford to get this resource depleted at any cost.

Finding a way to increase the cure rate of Tinea Infection

Tinea are the most common agents of superficial fungal infections worldwide and widespread in the developing countries, especially in the tropical and subtropical countries like India, where the environmental temperature and relative humidity are high, like India where the prevalence of tinea infection is high upto 36.6% to 78.4%.

Factors Responsible for Fungal Infections

All people are not equally susceptible to fungal infection, even when they have similar risk factors. Tinea infection is acquired directly from

  • Direct contact with infected humans, animals
  • indirectly from exposure to contaminated soil or things such as clothes, utensils, and furniture.

Or due to other factors such as increased urbanization including the use of occlusive footwear and tight fashioned clothes, has been linked to higher prevalence.

Differential Diagnosis of Tinea Infections depends on infectious sight or area affected like Tinea corporis (Chest, stomach), Jock Itch (Inner Thighs), Tinea faciei (Face), Tinea manuum(Hands), Athlete Foot and Ringworm.

Causes of Recurrence

Studies show that the conventional antifungals like azoles (miconazole and clotrimazole) with combinations of steroids (corticosteroid) preparations are unable to manage recurring fungal infections. Owing to their limitation of resistance and having a greater risk of adversity they are not recommended, primarily due to the higher-potency steroid component which may cause thinning of skin, recurrence, prone to secondary infections, etc.

Fungal Infections –  Increasing the cure rate

However, Ayurveda with its excellent action due to fungicidal action of herbs and limited side effects can give a cure to this antimicrobial resistant disease. Some preparations like Shuddha Gandhak or purified/detoxified Sulfur are a drug of choice in Ayurveda for tinea. It possesses potent antimicrobial activity which inhibits folic acid metabolism of fungal cells refraining it to grow further. Another preparation Purified Borax (Sudh Suhaga) inhibits  – C. albicans strains including fluconazole- resistant strains thereby working as a fungicidal without any untoward effect. A phytoconstituent Thymol derived from  Ajwain –   is known to possess antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Research studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of thymol against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including selected antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Sphaeranthus indicus (Gorakhmundi)Glycoside and Flavonoids extracts obtained from S. indicus acts as broad spectrum anti-infective activity by inhibiting different species of fungi and bacteria. Psoralia corylifolia (Bakuchi) Bakuchiol a flavonoid obtained from P. corylifolia prevents Recurrence by reducing ergosterol biosynthesis which leads to growth of retardation of cell growth and causes cell death. Cyperus rotundus (Motha) Sesquiterpene relives itching by exerting anti-allergic actions by inhibiting the release of beta-hexosaminidase.

Future of antifungal lies in herbal drug combination from the wealth of natural resources. On the same lines a revolutionary antifungal dusting powder Dermacharge is available in market by Aimil Pharmaceuticals which is a super absorbent and talc-free formula with Multi drug combination of above herbs not only provides therapeutic benefits on Fungal infections but also manages the recurring fungal infection by treating the root cause of disease. Dermacharge also extends its benefits in conditions of prickly heat, Skin Irritation, Itching, Topical Bacterial Infections and Allied Skin Diseases.

Win the silent battle of infertility

Parenthood is one of the most universally desired goals of adulthood in all species. However, among humans not all couples who desire a child will achieve one without any challenges. Sexual and reproductive health is a very personal issue which is everyone’s concern. This issue begins to affect people’s lives, first at adolescence when they start getting aware of the reproductive cycle and start to observe the changes in their body. This gross change can have acute effects on the young people's conduct and perspective towards life.

The biological battle

The biological interaction between stress and infertility is the result of the action of stress hormones at the brain level, especially on the hypothalamus-pituitary and on the female reproductive organs. Stress hormones such as catecholamines (adrenalin, noradrenaline and dopamine) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis interact with hormones which are responsible for normal ovulatory cycles: i.e., gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), prolactin, LH and FSH. Endogenous opiates and melatonin secretion are altered by stress and interfere with ovulation. Sympathetic innervation of the female reproductive system provides routes by which stress can influence fertility at the of the sex organs level.

Stress + Fertility = Trouble

Although global infertility prevalence rates are difficult to determine due to the presence of both male and female factors, infertility has been recognized as a public health issue worldwide by the World Health Organization.

One in every four couples in developing countries had been found to be affected by infertility.

Around 50% of these cases are due to males, while the other half is due to female factors. Thus, the burden remains high.

Above all STRESS remains a predominating factor to trigger set of unwanted  complex reaction in system to affect reproductive health

Today, modern medicine has the ability to find out the causes of infertility in an individual through several diagnostic tests and examinations. Using these tests, the treatment focuses on correcting and treating the dysfunction. Infertility can be managed by looking at the reproductive system components.

Ayurveda: Answer to the challenge

Ayurveda pays attention to each individual body type, enhances the body systems participating in the process of fertilization and therefore serves as an excellent alternative for reaching fertilization.

Ayurveda addresses the internal balances and external influences contributing to the problem by building the Ojas, improving the overall health of the individual, stimulating the hypothalamus and pituitary glands thereby indirectly inducing the ovaries to ripen and release eggs.

Ayurveda provides a non-invasive, low cost and non-iatrogenic alternative and complement to modern medicine in the treatment of infertility. Additionally, they tend to promote the systemic health and well-being of the individual.

Only a few products are there in the market which work on the correct principles of Ayurveda and have been established on scientific parameters. One such product is Amycordial for which a multi-centric clinical study was carried out with a combination of Amycordial along with Amree plus which improved fertility rate as 60 % of the patients conceived with the combo therapy in the condition of PCOS.

Similarly, a treatment of male partner with Semento that regulates all the semen parameters, restores anti-oxidant protection in semen Thus, helps fight against unexplained recurrent miscarriages (URM) by protecting sperm DNA and improves conception rate and Amycordial for female partner in cases of unexplained infertility works wonderfully well by reducing oxidative stress over the system and providing toning and nutritive properties to reproductive system.

With the unsurmountable pressure of infertility over our population, it’s high time that we put weight behind the concept of Ayurveda and bring in the prowess of brands like Amycordial along with Amree Plus and semento which can go a long way to fight infertility.

Discovering a novel natural approach in Haemorrhoids (Piles) Management

Hemorrhoids (Piles) are swollen or enlarged blood vessels located in the smooth muscles of the walls of the rectum and anus. They are cushioned by smooth muscles and connective tissue and are classified by where they are located in relation to the pectinate line, the dividing point between the upper 2/3 and lower 1/3 of the anus. This is an important anatomic distinction because of the type of cells that line the hemorrhoid, and the nerves that provide sensation.

Symptoms

Enlarged hemorrhoids are associated with symptoms such as itching, mucus discharge, burning at the anus, severe pain, a sensation that the bowel is not really empty, and bleeding without pain. Hemorrhoids are classified into following general categories:

  • internal, originating in the rectum, and external, originating in the anus.
  • Bleeding or Non-Bleeding Piles depending on condition of bleed
  •  three vascular cushions in the anus, positioned at the 3-, 7- and 11- o'clock positions.

Hemorrhoids (Piles) is classified into four grades:

  • Grade I: There are small inflammations, usually inside the lining of the anus. They are not visible.
  • Grade II: Grade II piles are larger than grade I piles, but also remain inside the anus. They may get pushed out during the passing of stool, but they will return unaided.
  • Grade III: These are also known as prolapsed hemorrhoids, and appear outside the anus. The individual may feel them hanging from the rectum, but they can be easily re-inserted.
  • Grade IV: These cannot be pushed back in and need treatment. They are large and remain outside of the anus.

Causes

Hemorrhoids (Piles) are caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum.

The blood vessels around the anus and in the rectum will stretch under pressure and may swell or bulge, forming piles. This may be due to:

  • chronic constipation
  • chronic diarrhoea
  • lifting heavy weights
  • standing or sitting for long periods,
  • eating a low-fiber diet,
  • pregnancy
  • straining when passing a stool or the tendency to develop pile may also be inherited and increases with age.

Diagnosis

A doctor can usually diagnose hemorrhoids (Piles) after carrying out a physical examination. They will examine the anus of the person with suspected piles and may ask the questions like whether any close relatives have piles, has there been any blood or mucus in the stools, has there been any recent weight loss, have bowel movements changed recently or what color are the stools?

For internal piles, the doctor may perform a digital rectal examination (DRE) or use a proctoscope. A proctoscope is a hollow tube fitted with a light. It allows the doctor to see the anal canal up close. They can take a small tissue sample from inside the rectum. This can then be sent to the lab for analysis.

The physician may recommend a colonoscopy if the person with piles presents signs and symptoms that suggest another digestive system disease, or they are demonstrating any risk factors for colorectal cancer.

Treatments

In some cases, piles resolve on their own without the need for any treatment when causative factors are prevented or removed. However, some health tips or herbal remedy can help significantly reduce the discomfort and itching that many people experience with piles.

Diet: Diet is believed to have a big impact in causing—and preventing—hemorrhoids. People who consistently eat a high-fiber diet are less likely to get hemorrhoids, while those people who prefer a diet high in processed foods face a higher hemorrhoid risk.

  • Rich Fiber Diet: There are two types of fibres – Soluble & Insoluble. The soluble kind forms a gel in digestive tract and can be digested by friendly bacteria, while insoluble fiber helps bulk up stool. To promote a healthy gut, you need both.
  • Legumes including beans, lentils, peas, soybeans, peanuts, and chickpeas, are the edible seeds of plants in the Fabaceae family. They’re loaded with both kinds of fiber but especially rich in the soluble type. Most adults should get 21–38 grams per day. Lentils and other legumes can bulk up stool, making it less likely that they have to strain when passing the stools. This can help prevent hemorrhoids or ease symptoms.
  • Whole Grains: These are nutritional powerhouses, because they retain their germ, bran, and endosperm, which are loaded with beneficial components like fiber. Whole grains are especially rich in insoluble fiber. This helps move your digestion along, which can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with piles.
  • Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, arugula, bok choy, kale, radishes, turnips, and cabbage and they’re predominantly known for their anticancer properties, they also deliver an impressive amount of insoluble fiber. Diversity of gut bacteria is linked to a more resilient gastrointestinal system, as well as improved immunity. Both this properties, insoluble fiber content & improved immunity, make cruciferous vegetables a great choice for preventing piles.
  • Root Vegetables: Root vegetables like sweet potatoes, turnips, beets, rutabagas, carrots, and potatoes are filling, rich in gut-healthy fiber and packed with nutrition. As they reduce constipation, it may ease piles symptoms.
  • Bell peppers & Celery delivers a lot of water, as well as fiber. This softens the stools and diminishes the need to strain.
  • Apple & Peers, be sure to eat these fruit with the peel on, as that’s where a lot of the piles-defying fiber can be found. Pears & apples boast an impressive amount of fiber. Similarly, bananas & berries are considered fibrous, raspberries stand out as a fiber-packing powerhouse.
  • Hydration: Keeping one hydrated with sufficient fluids will help make stools softer and easier to pass.

What should be avoided:

  • Spicy foods. While not necessarily low in fiber, spicy food may increase pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
  • Caffeinated beverages. These beverages, especially coffee, may harden your stools and make it more painful to use the restroom.
  • Alcohol. Like caffeinated beverages, alcoholic drinks can dry up your stools and exacerbate the discomfort of piles.
  • Low-fiber foods including Dairy products, White flour, Red meat, Fried foods, Processed meats, Salty foods and Caffeine containing drinks.

Lifestyle changes

A doctor will initially recommend some lifestyle changes to manage piles like

  • Losing body weight may help reduce the incidence and severity of piles.
  • Exercising like yoga, jogging and running for better metabolism and avoiding straining to pass stools and Heavy weight lifting.
  • Regular cleansing of the rectum & anus regions.
  • A normal and healthy sex life should be followed.
  • Use of Sitz Bath: A sitz bath is a warm, shallow bath that cleanses the perineum, which is the space between the rectum and the vulva or scrotum.
  • Avoiding sitting or standing for long periods.

The Ayurveda way of healing

Ayurveda is the most sought treatment in the management of haemorrhoids owing to the miraculous effect of herbs mentioned in Ayurvedic texts. Herbs used for ayurvedic treatment of piles include Psyllium Husk, Haritaki, Jimikand, Amla, Papaya, Ginger, Jambul, Guggulu, Neem, Daruharidra, Nagkesar, Chitrak, Raal and Radish which are very effective in  systemic & local management of piles. These herbs comprehensively act on the aetiological sites for piles by majorly toning GIT (Gastrointestinal Tract) motility & secretions and help prevent chronic constipation. Besides, these herbs offer synergistic benefits by providing instant symptomatic relief via significant anti-inflammatory, haemostatic, anti-microbial, wound healing, Liver protective, metabolic corrective actions, toning functions of Gastro–Intestinal Tract as whole. These herbs also exerts haemostatic action by toning the blood micro-capillaries, thereby checks bleeding per rectum significantly and exerts anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting inflammatory mediators like leukotriene, thereby controls pain & itching in rectum region. Here, neem specifically acts as anti-microbial agent against a wide spectrum of bacteria, fungi & protozoa, inhibiting their growth without disturbing intestinal microflora, thereby checks any kind of secondary infection near the rectum.

All these herbs have been incorporated in a product named Amroid which is available as oral tablets for systemic action and ointment for local application. Amroid dual therapy offers a comprehensive management in hemorrhoids and is a good candidate for inclusion in any regimen of piles management.

Anti-acne innovation which bagged the CIMS excellence award

Innovation is a catalyst for change – this saying has again been proved right in the recent CIMS Medica Excellence Awards 2019 where a novel breakthrough for acne & pimple. Purodil bagged the award for ‘Most emerging brand in wellness category (Derma)’. The 5th Grand edition of Nutrition and Wellness 2019 award took place in Mumbai on 10th December 2019. The award recognises the excellence in various domains viz. research and development, manufacturing, distribution and other support services. Purodil emerged as an undisputed winner amongst its rivals due to its innovative approach in treatment of acne, pimple, folliculitis, cellulitis and boils.

In India, for treatment of such condition the mainstay is a topical formulation which provides a temporary relief causing recurrence and relapse. Aimil Pharmaceuticals addressed this lacuna by introducing a dual therapy for treatment of acne and pimples.

Innovation at work

Purodil syrup and tablet is a unique systemic approach as it works on gut- brain- skin axis where it detoxifies the impurities of blood by virtue of Chirayata (Swertia chirata) & Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata). To provide quick symptomatic relief Purodil syrup and tablet contains Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) & Haridra (Curcuma longa) which act as anti-inflammatory and anti- allergic respectively. Stress-acne-stress cycle is also known to be a major impediment in treatment of these disorders. Purodil oral therapy is enriched with Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) & Giloe (Tinospora cordifolia) which exerts anti-stress action and hence terminates this vicious cycle.

Innovation + Technology = Miracle

To augment this internal therapy Aimil has also launched Purodil gel which is an exclusive topical innovation to fight acne & pimples. Purodil gel exerts lethal action on acnegenic bacteria (P.acnes & S.epidermidis) due to a novel phyto- constituent alpha- mangostin enriched from garcinia fruit. In a study published in International Journal of Research in Cosmetic Science it was revealed that Purodil gel showed better percentage inhibition (98%) against P.acnes as compared to clindamycin (84%) at 1 gm/ml concentration. Patients many times get worried about the scars, redness due to acne and pimples Purodil gel is enriched with Kumari (Aloe vera), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus) which are known to repair reduce redness of acne damaged skin. Teenagers are the main victims of acne and pimples and due to their junk food eating habits, glycemic load on liver is always high which results in increased androgens and sebum production leading to acne and pimples. The element which act as a key to this chain is 5-alpha reductase which when inhibited decreases sebum production and hence the prominence of acne. Purodil gel with advanced polymer technology inhibits 5-alpha reductase locally by Bakuchi (Psoralea coryfolia). The gel has also been studied for primary skin irritation test where it was found to cause no scars, erythema, skin irritation and edema. The clinical study of dual therapy resulted in seven- fold reduction in papula number combined with reduction in redness and inflammation.

Aimil’s philosophy of taking Ayurveda parallel to modern science is itself a testimony of innovation at work and when it is married with advanced technology like polymer sciences, it sets new benchmark for the whole industry. This innovation directly benefits the patients and open a new paradigm of treatment options for physicians. And recognitions like the CIMS medica excellence award serves as a motivation for the whole industry to think out of the box.

The art & science of healing since antiquity

Healing with medicinal plants is as old as mankind itself. The connection between man and his search for drugs in nature dates back from an ancient era, of which there is sufficient

evidence from various sources: written documents, preserved monuments, and even original plant medicines. Awareness & modern researches of these medicinal plants usage is a result of the many years of struggles against illnesses due to which man learned to pursue drugs in barks, seeds, fruit bodies, leave and other parts of the different plants such as Soma, Trikatu, Vacha, Arjun, Khadir & many more which are classically mentioned in Purana, Upanishads, Veda, Grantha & Samhita’s.

MYTHOLOGICAL JOURNEY

The story of most popular “Samudra Manthan” appear in the Bhagvata Purana, Mahabarat & Vishnu Purana introduce several medicinal herbs obtained deep from the ocean, one such herb was “GILOE” OR “GUDUCHI” (Tinospora cordifolia) due to its divine origination the herb incorporates great health benefits and has been used in India since ancient times.

Also with scientific ethos discovering the secrets of this divine herb was acknowledged & therefore, in recent outbreaks of Dengue, Malaria, Chronic fevers, Swine flu, and several other fevers of unknown origins. Giloy is one herb of choice, which has been effective in fighting these fevers where modern medicine is still struggling to find cures.

In Valmiki Ramayana, there is a description of four herbs having the capability of resurrecting life. As Lord Lakshmana regained consciousness just after smelling these following herbs

  • Mritasanjeevani: for reviving a life
  • Vishalyakarani: for removing arrows
  • Sandhanakarani: for restoring damaged skin
  • Suvarnyakarani: for restoring skin colour

Understanding its miraculous power various research bodies including The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) extensively working in order to identify plants of the similar family since ancient to modern times.

Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) in various “Upanishads” known as “The Universal Medicine”, as Zingiber officinalis since ages have been used in treating digestive, respiratory & circulatory disorders. Although with today’s advent of scientific researches it has been proven to not only aid in digestion but also shown anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic & anti-oxidant properties, therefore, is very effective in conditions such as vomiting, belching, hemorrhoids, osteoporosis, rheumatism, cold, & with such a long list of actions & indications, it is no wonder to be accepted as “The Universal Medicine” in today’s world.

The golden herb Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) stands the test of time. As it has been worshipped, revered & medicinally admired by people for centuries. Charka Samhita, one of the oldest healing text in Ayurveda explains its exclusive benefits in almost every therapeutic section weather suffering from an acute or chronic disease, ache & pain, bumps & bruises or preventive maintenance. Thereby with time, ample researches were undertaken in order to prove hundreds of molecular constituents present in turmeric along with various biological activities such as antibiotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cancer preventive, anti-tumor and many others. Managing Diabetes in Cold Weather

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as Madhumeha is a condition in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood, also termed as “Hyperglycaemia”. During this condition the body can't use glucose (a type of sugar) that is the main source of energy for the body's cells.

Though the fall Season is considered enjoyable for the holidays, but since it comes with Chill & cold weather, it may have a negative impact on those living with Diabetes. As excessive cold leads to stress and strain in the body and this stress often causes the body to go into a flight-or-fight mode, releasing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol and these survival hormones cause the liver to release more glucose for energy, which can result in higher-than-normal blood sugar levels.

Therefore, for diabetics it's advised that they remain indoors during the most part of the day and monitor blood glucose closely for changes when temperatures start to dip. Blood sugar levels are dependent on factors besides the temperature, such as hydration, exercise, and the food you eat, but hydration is probably the single most important element to help us stay healthy outdoors. As Anyone with diabetes is especially prone to dehydration, which can become dangerous if left unchecked because it can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis. At the same time, dehydration can cause confusion, which may make a person unaware of low blood sugar. For that reason, carrying clear fluids such as water are considered best or another electrolyte-containing beverage especially if you are sweating excessively.

Diabetes may reduce circulation to feet, leaving them less able to keep warm in cold weather as a consequence winter may increase your chances of infection and pain in your feet.

Therefore, wear the warmest socks and well-fitting shoes or waterproof boots can get you to better health. Diabetics should also keep in mind that their risk of injury is higher if they stay out for long in cold weather, especially if they have any cardiac issue or neuropathy. Similarly, the cold weather can make blood thicker and more prone to clotting which can pose dangers due to high probability of cardiopathy in diabetics.

Broadly, there are four Tips for effective Diabetes management:

  • Avoid exposure to cold as lower temperature can increase HbA1C
  • Keep your food at right temperature.
  • Avoid stressful conditions
  • Take your medicine on time and monitor blood glucose regularly.

The natural way of healing – Ayurveda has mentioned various herbs which helps in the management of diabetes, herbs like Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) acts as natural DPP-4 inhibitor to effectively manage diabetes, improves glucose tolerance, reduces raised blood glucose level effectively along with cardiac protection. Another herbs like Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre) & Vijaysaar (Pterocarpus marsupium) help modulates insulin release, helps in repair & revival of Beta cells of pancreas and increases glucose mediated insulin release. Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) tends support cardiac protective, generally requires in diabetics in cold weather, being reported activities which show that it acts as potent antioxidant, diuretic, calcium channel blocker, antiplatelet, antidiabetic, anti-stress, immune-modulator etc. which can play an important role to detoxify ischemia induced free radical generation. Diuretic activity of Manjistha could be an alternative therapy in the management of congestive heart failure (CHF) for rapid mobilization of edema fluid. anti-stress, diuretic and vaso-dilating properties of Manjistha can play an important role in the management of hypertension. Rubia cordifolia inhibits platelet aggregation induced by PAF (Platelet Activating Factor) potentiate its therapeutic role in coronary artery disease. Anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemia effects of Manjistha direct its medicinal role in diabetic cardiomyopathy & diabetic microvascular disease and promotes peripheral utilization of Glucose. Rubia cordifolia exhibits spasmolytic activity similar to that of verapamil suggestive of presence of calcium channel blocker(s) like constituents in this plant and therefore, indicates its possibility to treat arrhythmias result from calcium overload in ischemia-reperfusion condition.

All these herbs are present in BGR – 34 which is a composite mix of herbal extractives, BGR-34 was co- developed by two national government-owned laboratories, National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and Central Institute for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) under the patronage of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The formulation was launched commercially by AIMIL Pharmaceuticals (AIMIL) in June 2016. Answering to a question in Parliament recently, Union Minister of Ayush, Shripad Naik said BGR-34, an anti-diabetes herbal drug developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been found to have therapeutic efficacy for treating newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. This has been shown by an independent clinical trials conducted in Varanasi-based Banaras Hindu. The unique herbs of Diabetic care products, not only take care blood sugar levels, but also relieves the associated problems like weakness, fatigue, excessive urination, excessive hunger, weight loss etc. They also nourishes & strengthens the vital organs by supplementing essential micro-nutrients, anti- oxidants and immuno-modulators.

In conclusion, the most important pieces of advice for diabetics is to stay protected from cold/chill during the winter session and second is to monitor blood glucose more frequently and manage euglycemia by regularly taking the prescribed OHG’s and opting for BGR-34 to effectively manage diabetes. If one keeps these tips in mind before going out in the cold this winter session, he or she can stay safe and enjoy this winter season.

Discovering a natural way to fight health hazards of pollution

Concern: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 11 of the 12 cities with the worst PM2.5 pollution are in India

What air quality alerts tell us about?

Air quality alerts inform the public about pollution levels in the air and advises vulnerable groups – such as children, elderly and people with lung disease- to take precautions.

An AQI number under 100 signifies good or acceptable air quality, while number above 100 is cause for concern and triggers an alert for vulnerable group.

The four major pollutants: – Ozone

When it’s up the Earth’s stratosphere, ozone gas protects us from harmful U.V rays. But at ground level ozone a major component of smog, can cause coughing, chest tightness or pain, decrease lung function and worsen asthma and other chronic lung diseases. It can harm the lining of the lungs, make lungs more vulnerable to infection, and potentially damage them.

Particulate matter

According to the aerodynamic diameter, 2 categories of particles are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • Coarse particulate matter (PM10) with an aerodynamic diameter of <10 μm, and
  • Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm.

Particles <10 μm in diameter can penetrate the nasal cavity to reach the alveoli, thus reaching the lungs and escaping into the blood stream. The smaller a particle is, the longer it will stay in the deeper sites of the lungs; furthermore, particles <1  μm  act  like gas molecules and reach the circulatory system. It can cause coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, palpitations, and fatigue; it can also aggravate asthma and chronic bronchitis.

Carbon monoxide

Because carbon monoxide decreases the amount of oxygen reaching the body’s organs, it can cause flu-like symptoms and chest pain in those with cardiovascular disease. While everyone is susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning, the unborn, babies, the elderly, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems are most at risk. High levels of carbon monoxide can result in dizziness, blurred vision and confusion.

Sulfur dioxide

Normally the irritating gas is kept out of the body by the nasal passages, but when physical exertion necessitates mouth breathing, sulfur dioxide can cause wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Long-term exposure can aggravate asthma and other chronic lung and cardiovascular diseases.

Air Pollution tied to wide range of illness. Air pollution may not always be visible, but it can be deadly.

Ayurveda always is the preferred choice of treatment in tough to treat conditions, In Shushrut Samhita acharya mentioned that in efforts to protect one’s army and land the weaker king introduces various types of poisons in land water and air in the way of a strong king and thus causes deliberate harm to the environment and other living beings including human. During those days it was the duty of royal physician to identify such toxic environment and purify it and also treat the persons affected by such environment.

Taking from the wealth of Ayurveda, Jufex forte cough syrup formulated with best of herbs in therapeutic concentration to help the vulnerable group of people, who suffers most from respiratory troubles because of one or the other reason.

Recommendations

  • Conserving energy is important. Turn off unnecessary lights and turn down air conditioning. Use Energy Star appliances.
  • Drive less and take public transportation or bike.
  • During air quality alerts, the vulnerable should reduce physical exertion and try to stay indoors with the windows closed. Those with asthma should carry their inhalers and use a face mask if they go outdoors.
  • Everyone has the right to breathe clean air, so is responsible for keeping air clean. # be aware #be responsible #Jufex forte
