Ayush Min, CSIR pact to boost Indian herbal drug industry
The Ayush Ministry and the country's premier research agency, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), have joined hands to explore modern scientific methods for integration with traditional medicine to boost prospects of Indian herbal products in the global market.
According to the MoU between the two organisations, emphasis will be on research and development, ayush-specific diagnostic tools, multi-ingredient herbal formulations and their standardisation among others, said a ministry official.
Various CSIR labs have already taken initiatives in this direction in the past too, for instance, scientists from the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) and the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), had jointly developed anti-diabetic herbal drug BGR-34 a few years ago, another official said.
The scientifically validated poly-herbal ayurvedic blood glucose regulator BGR-34 has been prepared from six medicinal plants including Daruharidra, Giloy, Gudmar and bitter gourds which are known for their anti-diabetic and anti-hyperglycemic properties. It is being marketed by Delhi-based AIMIL Pharmaceuticals.
The MoU was signed recently by Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Union Ayush Secretary and Dr Shekhar C Mande, Director General, CSIR.
As per the pact, the collaboration in preserving and protecting traditional knowledge related to the Indian systems of healthcare will also be strengthened through existing platforms and development of international standardized terminologies (disease-morbidity codes) in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU), database on medicinal plants, foods, etc.
Talking about importance of such handholdings, Kotecha said in view of the growing interest in traditional medicines worldwide, there is a need for multi-pronged and innovative approaches for acceptance of this science.
The combination of traditional healthcare and modern basic science has a huge possibility for innovative and path-breaking researches which can be used for the explanation of various basic concepts.
CSIR will prepare Ayurvedic medicines in 36 labs under MoU signed with Ayush Ministry
The Ayush Ministry is identifying at least 12,500 centers to turn them into full-fledged Ayush HWCs (Health and Wellness Centre) where all AYUSH services including treatment through scientifically-validated herbal drugs will be offered to patients under one roof.
Under the recent Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Ayush Ministry, the CSIR will prepare Ayurvedic medicines in 36 laboratories across the country. The MoU was signed for cooperation in research and education in areas of traditional systems of medicine and its integration with modern science.
The Ministry has also revealed that new Ayurvedic drugs will soon be available in the market as CSIR has already been working on them and there has been a growing interest of traditional medicines worldwide, there is a need of multipronged and innovative approaches for the acceptance of this science.

The Ayush Ministry is identifying at least 12,500 centers to turn them into full-fledged Ayush HWCs (Health and Wellness Centre) where all AYUSH services including treatment through scientifically-validated herbal drugs will be offered to patients under one roof. For instance, anti-diabetic herbal drugs like BGR-34 will be recommended to patients of a diabetic whose numbers is on increase due to changing lifestyle.
Composed of herbal medicinal plants like daruharidra, giloy, gudmar and bitter gourds which are known for their anti-diabetic and anti-hyperglycemic properties, BGR-34 was jointly developed after standardization and pre-clinical studies by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) two Lucknow-based labs —Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) and National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI).
Previously, CSIR jointly with Department of AYUSH (now Ministry) developed the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a globally recognized proprietary database on Indian systems of medicine for preventing bio-piracy and misappropriation of our traditional knowledge. The constituent laboratories of CSIR and councils of the Ministry of AYUSH have also supported each other in the development of improved varieties and captive cultivation of the medicinal plants including rare, engendered and threatened (RET) species, Botanical Reference Standards and Pharmacopoeial standards, and Ayurgenomics, among many others.

दोनों महकमों ने उम्मीद जताई है कि इससे आने वाले समय में देश में लाइलाज बीमारियों की नई दवाओं की खोज का रास्ता साफ होगा.
सीएसआईआर पहले ही बड़े पैमाने पर पौधों से निर्मित प्राकृतिक दवाओं पर गहन अनुसंधान गतिविधियों में शामिल हो चुका है. इसी के तहत दुनिया के कई देशों में तेजी से बढ़ते मधुमेह रोग के लिए बड़े पैमाने पर सीएसआईआर-एनबीआरआई और सीएसआईआर सीमैप द्वारा विकसित किया है. बीजीआर-34 के नाम से एमिल फॉर्मास्युटिकल ने इसे लॉन्च किया था, जो कि देश में अत्यधिक सफल रहा है.
जानकारी के अनुसार बीजीआर-34 एक वैज्ञानिक रूप से विकसित दवा जो विभिन्न चिकित्स्य परीक्षणों को पूरा कर निर्मित की गई है और मधुमेह को कंट्रोल करने में अत्यंत लाभकारी है. सीएसआईआर के महानिदेशक डॉ. शेखर सी. मांडे का कहना है कि सीएसआईआर ने पूर्व में आयुर्वेद से जुड़े कई अहम अध्ययन किए हैं.
इनमें एक अध्ययन में इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि मनुष्य की जेनेटिक संरचना की प्रकृति अलग-अलग होती है. इसे आयुर्वेद के वात, कफ और पित्त प्रकृति के अनुरूप पाया गया है. यानी तीनों प्रकृतियों की जेनेटिक संरचना के लोगों के लिए अलग-अलग दवाएं होनी चाहिए. इस शोध में प्रकृति के आधार पर भी दवाएं विकसित करने की दिशा में कार्य किया जाएगा. आयुष मंत्रालय से करार होने के बाद परंपरागत चिकित्सा ज्ञान से नई दवाओं की खोज होगी. साथ ही कुछ फार्मूलों को खाद्य पदार्थ के रूप में पेश किया जाएगा जिनसे लोगों में बीमारियों से बचाव हो सके.
आयुष मंत्रालय के सचिव डॉ. राजेश कोटेचा का कहना है कि आयुर्वेद को लेकर डिजिटल लाइब्रेरी हाल ही में विकसित कर चुके हैं जिसमें आयुर्वेद के सभी फार्मूलों को कई विदेशी भाषाओं में लिपिबद्ध किया है. इससे आयुर्वेद के नुस्खों पर विदेशों में होने वाले पेटेंट पर रोक लग गई है लेकिन अब इन्हीं फार्मूलों को खंगालकर सीएसआईआर नई दवा विकसित करेगा.
