Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common gynecological condition, affecting approximately 10%-35% of women during reproductive age. With a reported prevalence of 17.9% in India, AUB accounts for about ⅓ of gynecological OPD visits. The condition is characterized by an abnormality in duration, frequency, & volume of menstrual blood, resulting in embarrassment and declined quality of women’s life.

However, abnormal uterine bleeding can be a result of many structural & non-structural causes based on the PLAM-COEIN system. Therefore, the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) in 2011 abandoned the use of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB) & standardize the use of terms Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) & Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB) for better disease understanding.

What happens if abnormal or heavy menstrual bleeding is left untreated?

Abnormal uterine or heavy menstrual bleeding is challenging when not treated on time or neglected, causing 21-67% of women to develop iron-deficiency anemia. In such conditions, excessive blood is shed, resulting in fatigue, dizziness, lack of energy, shortness of breath, and poor blood picture. Some severe cases of untreated abnormal bleeding also resulted in ovulatory dysfunction and endometrial structural changes that need immediate surgical intervention.

Majorly in healthcare practices, hormonal pills, haemostatics, antibiotics, or intra-uterine devices are the treatment of choice to control bleeding & normalizing periods. But when administered in the long run, it negatively affects the natural harmony of women’s reproductive system. On the other hand, Ayurveda offers a bunch full of herbs & poly-herbal formulations that not just end this bleeding havoc but also significantly improve the blood picture.

Glycyrrhiza glabra (Yastimadhu)- It is reported that glabridin and iso-liquiritigenin derived from G. glabra roots suppress prostaglandin biosynthesis through inhibition of Cyclo-oxygenase and Lipo-oxygenase pathways, indicating its antispasmodic and uterine relaxant properties in AUB condition.

Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari)- Researchers have shown that the Phyto-estrogenic activity of Shatavari not just regularizes estrogen hormone & improves cyclicity but also shows a decline in uterine force & frequency of uterine contraction due to its rich bio-active component (Flavonoids, Isoflavonoids, Glycosides, etc.). Therefore, improves menstrual flow & reduces contractual pain associated with excessive uterine bleeding.

Mesua ferrea (Nagkesar)- It is seen that the principal constituents of Mesua ferrea that include mesuaferrone-A & B, mesuaferrol, mesuanic acid, α & β–amyrin, and β-sitosterol significantly arrest the bleeding & strengthen blood capillaries. It is also reported in a clinical study that Nagkesar, along with its hemostatic action, effectively manages the gap between two cycles. Therefore, improves the quantity of menstrual bleeding & its cyclic duration.

Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi)- Antioxidant-rich herb, Tinospora has been shown to enhance the overall oxidative defense. It reduces free-radical damage by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, resulting in better ovarian health and reduced psychological stress caused due to excessive bleeding.

Indian Chamber of Food and Agriculture along with Agriculture Today Group, organised the first-ever INDIA ANIMAL HEALTH SUMMIT AND AWARDS 2022 on 6-7 July, at NASC, New Delhi. Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying inaugurated the summit and talked about the need to strengthen cooperative movement in the livestock sector and he called for greater use of Ayurveda for ensuring better animal health.

As a new venture of the prestigious AIMIL Pharmaceuticals, Delhi-based Ayouthveda was incorporated amid a pandemic in 2020. It has emerged as India’s one of the fastest-growing Ayurvedic personal care brands, offering a wide range of premium beauty and wellness products. Since its launch, Ayouthveda has posted strong revenue of Rs 26 crore in FY-2022.
